Hi Dr. Ben, Just had my 4 year old daughter tested since I am homozygous c677t. She has 1 copy of the C677t mutation. My questions are: 1) Do I hold back on vaccinations (she’s had some vaccinations but needs 8 more)? I’ve read doctors can order vaccines without perservatives. 2) What supplements and dosages of each should I give her? 3) What about diet? 4) Is there anything else I should have her tested for? I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks, Zorica |

Zorica – 1) This is a personal decision. If you’d like to use preservative-free vaccines, that is a cleaner option. There is also the risk of the adjuvants though which over stimulate the immune system thereby imbalancing it – causing people to become more allergic. I personally use liquid vitamin D3 and probiotics for my family vs flu vaccines or other vaccines. However, it is personal choice and do what you feel most comfortable with. I encourage you to evaluate http://www.NVIC.org Vitamin D3 amounts: 1,000 IU per 25 lbs of body weight. Both of these naturally support her immune system. 2) Consider Optimal Multivitamin Chewable: 1/2 tablet with breakfast and 1/2 tablet with lunch. Do for 2 weeks. If she tolerates well, then increase to 1 tablet with breakfast and 1 tablet with lunch. Consider 1 teaspoon of Optimal Fish Oil Liquid straight as it tastes quite good or simply mix in a smoothie or put on some food. Consider Active B12 Plus Metafolin and give her 1/5th tablet first thing in the morning on or under the tongue. Do this every 3rd day to start. Increase to every other day after 2 weeks. If you notice irritability, insomnia, muscle aches, headaches, she is getting too much methylfolate. Stop the Active B12 with Methylfolate for a few weeks and then proceed to give 1/2 as much as you were before and 1/2 as often. |

Thanks for the reply! I plan to put her on a supplement regiment per your suggestions. I’m wondering why give her the additional Active B12 plus Metafolin since the Optimal Multivitamin Chewable contains the methylfolate and B12. Is it because the multivitamin doesn’t contain enough of each for her to get what she needs? Also, I’m worried she’s not getting enough calcium. Should I give her additional cal/mag or is the multivitamin sufficient enough? Thanks! Zorica |

Zorica – You may try her without the Active B12 with Methylfolate – and use just the Optimal Multivitamin Chewable. If her symptoms improve and she is doing very well, then no need for the Active B12 with Methyfolate. If you are worried about her not getting calcium, consider giving her Chia Seeds sprinkled on her cereal in the morning, her salad or just straight. You can also mix them in jam and almond butter. You may also consider giving her 1 to 2 chewable tablets of Cal/Mag Plus D Chewables anytime of day. |
