Rachel

I was just diagnosed with this in a routine blood test. What now?

Dr Ben

Hi Rachel –

Have your doctor order a blood test to measure your Homocysteine levels.

If you have clotting problems, have your doctor run tests to identify other conditions which are contributors to this problem.

The reasons I am recommending the nutrients below is because your body has a problem converting folic acid to methylfolate. You need to supplement with methylfolate and methylcobalamin in order to side-step around the homozygous C677T mutation.

If you supplement inappropriately for this, you will likely experience undesired symptoms.

Below are my recommendations that work well for those with C677T homozygous mutations.

I recommend you consider taking a multivitamin with methylfolate – Optimal Multivitamin has the full blend of active B vitamins in their best forms along with the most absorbable forms of minerals.

Consider taking 3 capsules with breakfast and 3 capsules with lunch.

In order to safely start addressing your MTHFR C677T homozygous mutation, consider taking 1 sublingual tablet daily of Active B12 5000.

Start with 1 tablet before breakfast and see how you feel on this amount for 1 week.

If feeling good, add in 1/2 tablet of Active B12 with Methylfolate before breakfast.

If feeling good and no symptoms of headache, irritability, insomnia, joint pains, muscle aches, then increase the amount of Active B12 with Methylfolate by adding in a second time of taking 1/2 tablet before lunch time.

Do this for 2 weeks.

If you feel good on this amount, stop the Active B12 with Methylfolate and start taking 1 capsule of HomocysteX before breakfast.

If you feel good with 1 capsule of HomocysteX for 1 week, increase to 1 capsule before breakfast and 1 before lunch.

If feeling better, consider increasing to 2 capsules before breakfast and 1 capsule before lunch – total of 3 capsules. Try this for a week.

If you feel good on those amounts, stay on them.

If you begin feeling symptoms of headaches, muscle aches, irritability, insomnia, then stop taking HomocysteX for 2 weeks. Then go back on it or the Active B12 with Methylfolate to the amount you tolerated well.

Consider taking 1 capsule of Optimal Vitamin E to protect your cardiovascular system from the damaging effects of homocysteine.

This is a good starting point!
