I am Homozygous C677t and exclusivly nursing my 5 month old daughter. My questions concern me and my daughter. After my son was diagnosed with MTHFR C677t Heterozygous and after reading about the mutation, I knew right away I had it too so I got tested. I was 14 weeks pregnant with my daughter at the time, and knew the importance of folic acid in pregnancy.I started taking the FolaPro right away, along with fish Oil, probiotics, prenatal vitamins and going on the GAPS Diet (Gut and Psychology Syndrome Diet), assuming I had MTHFR as well. I was diagnosed with MTHFR C677t Homozygous. I have had problems with depression as far back as I can remember. I mostly have seasonal depression, but it is not limited to winter time. Usually it is mild, to moderate. This winter is better since I am taking the L-5 Methylfolate, probiotics, diet changes etc and so is this postpartum experience. I had postpartum depression with my son. I have wonderful pregnancies, but Postpartum seems to be hard on me. I have some bad days this time around, but not as bad, and if I find time to get back into exercising I think it would improve. Exercise always makes me feel happy. Most of my other problems started when I was older. I have had problems with forgetfulness, brain fog, depression, acne, eczema, migraines. At my worst I would have aching joints, and fatigued, weak muscles. It felt awful going up the stairs. The best way to help improve that would be exercise so i think the toxins were building up in my body. I have had issues with food, especially dairy. I also have problems with a sluggish gut. It is better now with the changes, but I still struggle. I have had issues with progetestorne levels, and a short to extremely short luteal phase. I had a hard time getting pregnant with my son and it took almost 2 years to get my cycle back after he was born. I was nursing so I think that was part of it. I think I had one chemical pregnancy, but it was too early to test, and have had no miscarriages. Both pregnancies and getting my cycle back happened after I started by chance, by taking Vitamin B supplements and Folic Acid. Since going on L-5 Methylfolate I have not had much patience and I also have not had much motivation. I need to know how to find both again. I think some as to do with lack of exercise though. What I want to know, is what I am taking appropriate for me being Homozygous C677t? For being a Nursing Mother? Is there something more I should be taking? Is there something I can do to improve my patience, motivation, forgetfulness, seasonal depression? What are safe ways to help me detox while nursing? I have a 5 month old Daughter as well. Because I am Homozygous, I assume that she is at least Heterozygous depending on whether or not my husband has the mutation. I am still trying to convince him to take the test. She is a much better sleeper than my son and doesn’t have the stomach issues my son has. She does have periods when she “sleeps like my son” which is to say she doesn’t. Lol! My Daughter was born with a butt dimple which upon researching it I believe it is a Sacral Dimple, a tight frenulum, and a high palate. She hasn’t had her Sacral Dimple looked at yet so I don’t know if it is a tethered cord or not. I had never even heard of it before, but as soon as I saw it, it made me nervous because I knew of the possibilities of spinabifida with MTHFR. We will be taking to a doctor about it soon. She is exclusively breast fed. What I want to know is if she is getting the proper amount of L-5 Methylfolate she needs from my breast milk? Everyone I talked to said she will but they don’t know anything about MTHFR so I am not sure if that is correct. I am concerned about her and making sure she will get what she needs to be healthy, but I am also uncomfortable giving her any supplements before her digestive system is ready for them. Any imput would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! |

Joy – Breastfeeding is actually detoxing. I do not recommend any further support in terms of detoxification while breastfeeding. Prevention is key and that can be done via chlorella and probiotics – and fish oil. If you feel anxious while taking methylfolate, I suspect you may have a COMT or/and CBS mutations. These alter how your neurotransmitters are created – and eliminated. Your daughter will be getting methylfolate and any other nutrients via your breastmilk. Given your symptom picture, you are not taking what you should be – some things are missing – or/and your diet and lifestyle are not optimized. I do recommend a consult to get a handle on all these concerns. It is not all MTHFR here – there are other issues at play. |

If I may reply, I have ALOT of your symptoms and pain issues and I have celiac disease…..The fix is gluten-free. Try gluten-free for 6months it will not harm your breastfeeding baby or you to take wheat out of your diet. Even if you don’t have celaic disease you could have s senstivity to wheat, it’s so common I would give it a try but if you do i was told not to expect results for 8weeks, after 8-12 weeks you should start to see improvement and it may take 6months to feel better. Also they hide gluten in foods, read labels like crazy…Malt has gluten, gluten-free bread is hard to find (well bread that you can eat) |

I agree with Jennifer. Gluten and dairy are to be avoided by all due to the wide ranging ill effects they cause. |

if you have this mutation you need to have the acivte form of Folic Acid, B12 and B6. Inacivte = Active FormFolic Acid = L-Methyl FolateB12 = methylcobalaminB6 = Pyridoxyl 5 Phosphate Just wondering in all your research if you knew anything about that. Hopeful that you will be a mom!Jill |
