I was recently diagnosed with 1 copy of C677t and 1 copy of A1289C. My question is whether or not it is safe for me to be on hormonal birth control. My OBGYB who ordered the testing said I should be fine as long as I am on a baby aspirin regime. What are your thoughts? Thank you for all of your wonderful information and resources on this site!

Dr Ben

Lynn –

If you are open to family planning, that is the most ideal method of birth control as it is hormone free and does not deplete nutrients such as folic acid.

I am not well-versed in all the other forms of birth control out there anymore – I am hoping there are some new ones out there.

Ladies and Gents – anything you know of? Please share.

Lynn,

I am also compound heterozygous. My OB will only put me on progesterone only birth control as ones with estrogen put a higher risk of clots, stroke, etc. There is a pill form that many mothers take while breastfeeding. He would do the IUD for me, however, my insurance doesn’t cover contraceptives and it wouldn’t be cost efficient for me to use it for a short period of time before wanting to get pregnant again. I hope this helps!
