Dr. Ben,

1) A1298C Hetero
C677T Hetero
3 Hetero

2) My question is what to make of this and what to do about it. Issues I do have (not necessarily related): Depression, too much REM sleep, exhaustion, high blood calcium, low sperm count. I already took methylfolate, P-5-P and methylcobolamine to see if that would make any difference, but as far as I can tell, there was no appreciable effect. Having said that, *any* input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
1) State which MTHFR mutation you have: A1298C, C677T or both AND how many copies you have of each. 2) Ask your question clearly. 3) Do not include any other information.

Hello –

There are many reasons for your symptoms above and they may not relate to MTHFR at all.

Have your doctor check your parathyroid and vitamin D3 levels – to evaluate why you have excess calcium.

Low sperm count may be related to low carnitine (which is also related to low folate, interestingly – saw a connection there today and need to note it).

Low sperm count may also be low zinc levels or BPA exposures – or all the above.

Adrenals may be shot due to your activity level (sportsman) or stress.

Depression may be due to MTHFR, weak adrenals, inadequate intake of nutrients, unhealthful food choices, not enough activities in your life.

A consult will help pinpoint accurate suggestions.

Many believe if they have MTHFR, it is the cause of most of their symptoms – at times, it can be – at other times, it is not at all. All pieces connect.

Thanks!

To answer your questions:
a) Vit D level is 52 ng/ml. (I’ve been supplementing with 5000-10000 IU/day in the past year)
b) Parathyroid hormone is low (26).

Do you recommend Acetyl-L-carnitine or just straight carnitine?
How does one determine BPA exposure and possible detox?

Lascap –

Your D3 levels look a bit high. You don’t want to go over 52 much more – that is a solid D3 level. Too high of D3 can cause elevated blood calcium.

I also read a study today that taking Betaine improves sperm and infertility in men with MTHFR.

I recommend acetyl-l-carnitine as it is better utilized by the body and much more stable.

HomocysteX Plus by Seeking Health contains methylfolate, betaine, pyridoxal-5-phosphate, riboflavin-5-phosphate and methylcobalamin.

Make sure you are eating every couple hours with some form of protein – smaller meals – just more frequently.

We’re all exposed to BPA. Certain strains of probiotics help eliminate BPA and bind it.

The probiotic strains used in the study are found in ProBiota 12.

Best time to take probiotics is in the evening after dinner.
