Dr. Ben,

My sister was recently diagnosed with the compound heterozygous mutation. I also was currently diagnosed with homozygous (C677T). My homocysteine levels were normal, 6.8 umol/L. I am currently on the birth control pill, Yaz. I know that Yaz puts some women at an increased risk for blood clots, stroke, and heart attack. Is being on birth control harmful to me with my mutation? (I am not a smoker).

Also, I was diagnosed with spina bifida occulta. My sister with compound hetero had a baby about 3 years ago with spina bifida myelomeningocele. I am 25, should I currently be taking a prescription strength folic acid? Are there any other medications/vitamins I should consider taking? I am also exhausted all the time, even after getting countless hours of sleep. My primary said that being tired has nothing to do with this mutation. Is this correct, or can this mutation play a role?

Thank you for your site and all the information you have provided. I look forward to hearing from you.

Dr. Lynch will undoubtedly have information for you here, but I wanted to respond as I have the same mutation and had DVTs in both calves when I took the generic form of Yaz a few years ago….And things haven’t been the same since; once you have a blood clot, even if it’s small as mine were, your circulation in those areas doesn’t seem to return to normal. I am older than you (40 at the time of taking that BCP) which certainly put me at greater risk (I didn’t know of my mutation at the time.) Information is power…if I had it to do over again and knew I had the mutation, I would have stayed away from BCPs altogether. Best of luck to you – learn what will help your body navigate in the best way w/ this mutation….it can affect you in many ways.

Jennie – thank you for sharing your thoughts here -very useful.

Lisa – you must get off of Yaz. The ‘happy-go-lucky’ girls in the commerical are absolutely ridiculous as I feel Yaz is quite dangerous – especially for those with homozygous C677T MTHFR mutations.

I recommend you switch to an IUD, ovulation calendar (family planning) or Nuva Ring (just wish there was one made with medical grade silicone!)

Birth control pills affect folic acid levels and you already have folic acid issues with the C677T mutation.

Are you addressing the MTHFR mutation yet? Doesn’t appear so. Prescription strength folic acid is worthless for your mutation – it simply increases folic acid levels without providing methylfolate.

I highly recommend you schedule a consult with me for 30 minutes and we can get you squared away. Your sister should also schedule.

I disagree with your physician.

Your symptoms of tremendous fatigue are classic for MTHFR C677T – however, there are other possible contributors to your symptoms which must be evaluated.

If you do not have the ability to properly produce neurotransmitters, detoxify, make DNA or fight off infections well, I’d say that would make you tired.

All those issues are caused by the C677T MTHFR mutation.

Good news is you can bypass the mutation and begin getting your life back – or start it for the first time.

Please call 800-547-9812 to schedule a consult. You may also start the process online by obtaining consult minutes online here.
