My ND started me on Thorne methyl folate and some methyl B12 a few weeks ago. I had already been suffering from severe toxicity, anxiety and depression, along with insomnia. The symptoms gradually got worse even though she started me on a very small dose, 1 mg. When I tried to indcrease to 2 mgs, I had severe panic attacks and felt almost suicidal. I felt immediately better as soon as I stopped, and then I had a couple days of withdrawal like symptoms, then started to stabilize a little more. Was I just too weak and sick to begin this treatment? If I get stronger on a healthy diet and more sleep, will this make it possible for me to tolerate the treatment? It’s obvious I need it, or I would’t have reacted so strongly. But I’m terrified to try again. |

I wanted to add one more question. I am having a severe arthritis flare up, seds are way up. I was thinking of trying Wobenzyme N to get the inflammation down, but I’ve been reading that it works to clear up toxic debri in the body. Would that be too much with an MTFHR gene mutation for me to handle right now, or could I just go really slow with it? I really need to get the inflammation down. |

I know some of us have to start on very low doses of the b’s in the beginning. My doctor did not know about this either. He put me on full doses of metanx and after the 2nd dose I ended up really sick. I had to then take one metanx every other day then one a day and eventually two a day. A few months back I went on Dr. Ben’s homocystex plus because the doses are much lower. I take anywhere from 2-4 a day and not all at once. This has helped me out tremendously. And when I get tachycardia and anxiety, I have found that taking an extra TMG helps out a lot. And it is really important to make sure your gut is healed. Active b’s are a natural chelator and you will start dumping toxins and one place is the gut. To help with all of this I also take vitamin C and a mineral supplement (not around the b vitamins), vitamin E, molybdenum, Dr. Ben’s multi, a 15 strain probiotic with FOS and trace minerals, milk thistle and at night before bed I take some activated charcoal to absorb the toxins and draw them into my gut so they don’t redistribute thru my body. It is good to also be gluten free to help heal your gut and to be able to absorb nutrition. It is all so much what we have to do to clear toxins. It is a balancing act for sure. I know when I get inflamations such as arthritis, I do organic black cherry juice concentrate. That seems to help me lots. I have now realized it is good to go slow when starting an MTHFR protocol. I have a little rule, I only start one new supplement a month to see how I am reacting and I keep a journal. That way I know what to take out of my protocol if there is a problem. Here is a very long lecture by Rich VanK explaining methylation. It also explains what you are feeling and going through at the moment. http://iaomt.media.fnf.nu/2/skovde_2011_me_kroniskt_trotthetssyndrom/$%7Bweburl%7D I hope this lecture helps you better understand and I hope you start feeling better soon. |

Thank you for your reply! I have a tendency to want to do too many things at once because I worry so much about what’s going on in my body. I’m off the B vitamins now, and terrified to start again. But I know I need to. What I’ve been on for a while is Calm magnesium powder, vitamin C crystals, silica, digestive enzymes, betaine HCL, fish oil,Bach flower remedies, and sometimes a little nettle tea. I tried milk thistle yesterday and the day before. I find I can only take a few sips of the tea at a time. I also started eating some bubbies sourkraut which is full of probiotics. Maybe I should just stick with that for a while until my liver and gut are ready to deal with more detox. I bought some clay for detox clay baths. My ND thinks that will be okay, but I’m going to go super slow, maybe just very weak foot baths at first. Thank you for the input! |

Gretchen – You may be getting adequate methylfolate from your diet and/or you may have other genetic mutations that increase your level of circulating neurotransmitters – COMT and MAO A. If you ever take methylfolate and are experiencing side effects, take about 50 mg of nicotinic acid – works like magic. Given your symptoms of anxiety anyhow, niacin may be something for you to take daily. |
